8vo, 234; 23pp. A very good copy bound in full tree calf with gilt decorations and title. Endpapers and edges of text block are also decorated with a mottled marbling. Previous owner's bookplate. Head of spine and front hinge have been neatly repaired preserving the original binding. Rear hinge is cracked and the tail band of the spine has worn.

An account by the missionary George Vason (in this volume his name has been handwritten in the title line) of his residence on the island of Tongatapu between 1797 and 1799. Vason enlisted with the London Missionary Society and was later selected for a proselytising voyage to the Pacific Islands. Upon settling Vason he learned the language, wore Tongan dress, married a Tongan woman and received tattoos. Vason's time in the Pacific was compiled by the clergyman and writer Solomon Piggott and published in 1810 along with two of Piggott's sermons.
